West Harlem: The Broadway Artery
Created by Cebe Loomis
August 2015
it has been written that the promise land
can be found above 137th street
jazzed snapbacks and fast words
a renaissance and a new-wave
corner pick ups and stoop drop-offs
the sweats managed by sidewalk shade
a game of straight dominos
and some bumpin' merengue
dominican ices
and too many ambulances
mexican sopas
and forgotten cemeteries
a police raid
jams up the school buses
maybe the promised land
is in the abandoned P.S. on 145th
the one with the shoes
hanging from the telephone wires out front
or maybe it's being bought
by that taco truck parked outside
the vacant classrooms
the one that services the faded nights
