Cambodia: Family and the Home
Created by Cebe Loomis
May 2014
Since 2000, UCLA Professor of Sociology, Patrick Heuveline, has been studying Cambodian family structures and their change since the Khmer-Rouge period (1975-79). In March of 2014, I was commissioned to create a visual log of his research, entitled, Family and the Home.
This group of photographs is the first visual account of his dedicated, thirteen-year study. In my experience, incorporating visual components within academic research is imperative to create a body of work that moves beyond text, numbers or observations, catching a glimpse of someone's personal narrative. Each questionnaire belongs to a face, and each household counted has a story.
